PLY (v.1, released Nov 20, 2023)
OBJECT OF THE GAME:
Spell out the PLYword with letters from three clue solutions.
Each clue contains multiple ‘PLIES’ or ‘layers’ of facts to find that you’re not expected to already know (though you might!), so PLY your critical thinking skills to determine what to learn & then search the internet (and/or the brains of knowledgeable people near you) to get you to a clue’s solution.
STEPS:
- Solve the three clues in the cluebox, using the internet and those around you as clue-solving companions.
- The clues represent different knowledge categories (e.g. U.S. Supreme Court, African Literature, World Geography), all connected by a unique homonym - specifically, a homograph, which is a word with different meanings & the same spelling - highlighted in the clue. Like "ply", for instance. :)
- Isolate one or two letter(s) from each clue’s solution, using the one or two number(s) to the left or right of that clue.
- The number(s) reveal the order of the letter(s) to isolate from the clue’s solution. Example: If the number next to a clue is 4, and the clue solution is “bingo”, isolate the 4th letter from “bingo”, which is “g”. OR If the numbers are 6 & 2 (top to bottom), and the solution is “rhinoceros”, isolate the 6th & 2nd letters respectively from “rhinoceros”, which are “c” & “h”.
- Spell out the PLYword, by arranging the isolated letters left to right (from the clues top to bottom).
- The letters are to be written in lowercase. Example:
FINISHING THE GAME:
Write your email and your PLYword entry in the form, and tap Submit to finish. A results page will reveal how you did and invite you to share your results! Note: Results are not linked to an account at this time.
Each clue typically has only one solution. In cases where there could be multiple (like if a name could be spelled multiple ways), there remains exactly one set of one or two isolated letter(s) per clue, meaning that there is exactly one PLYword per day.
Example: If the numbers next to a clue are 3 & 1 (top to bottom), and the clue solution could be “Sam” or “Sammy” or “Samuel”, isolate the 3rd & 1st letters respectively from any of the possible solutions, which are “m” & “s”.
